The site is not large and it has an unusual shape. This limits the size of buildable area but the client wanted a house that was small yet impressive in terms of size. In designing the roof we used as a starting point the maximum height allowed by building regulations and considered questions of how sunlight could best be let into the house and how the variations in structure and in desired expression could best be achieved.

The roof is formed as a folding copper plated skin. That leads shadows being cast on the house’s outer facade in a manner emphasising the depth and structural continuity of the house and enhancing the impression of size and volume.
